NETWORKING - INPUT - COOPERATION - SUPPORT - QUALITY OF LIFE

PfCONA was formed in 1985 by Pflugerville residents who wanted to provide a forum for neighborhood groups to collectively air their concerns and work with the City Council to resolve problems.

Its goal was to bring the community together. This goal continues today. Won't you join us in "building the community together?"

PARKS AND RECREATION

The Parks and Recreation Department has outdoor facilities that may be reserved (there may be a fee) for use by neighborhood organizations.  Families may wish to become members of the Parks and Recreation Center. There are various activities throughout the year that may be promoted to the families in your neighborhood such as camps, Deutchen Pfest, holiday activities, runs, bike rides, Heritage House Museum, Garden Club, Pool, Drop by Drop Program, and more. [See column to right for related links]

The Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Commission meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Center, 400 Immanuel Road.

  • More recent newsbriefs to be added in very near future, plus Pflugerville Pflag is planning to setup its own website.

  • (6/13/02) Citizen-built Park Would Help Build Ownership in Community (Editor) -- In a story published in last week's edition...two members of the Pflugerville City Council were quoted as saying they liked concepts being discussed for a proposed 10-acre park near the Gatlinburg subdivision. Here's the notion that I liked best--the idea that citizens would help construct the facility. I'm not talking about just the nearby residents, but a good old-fashioned barn raising where the entire town chips-in. A weekend or two, or three where we, as a community, bring out our shovels, picks, backhoes, tractors and whatever implements we have access to, and get to work. No greater dividends than one paid with sweat and time.

Such a bold park construction plan would serve as a unifying element in the city. A chance for many people from many groups, subdivisions and churches to share and benefit from a wealth of resources...the construction of a park would offer those who do the work a chance to have a long-term impact on one of Texas' best small towns. I would disallow the placement of plaques spouting the names of service clubs or other groups who participate. The park would be a place for quiet achievement.

  • (6/6/02) Citizen-designed Park Gets High Marks -- The Pflugerville city council asked local residents to work with the city's staff to come up with a master plan for the development of a park on 10 acres owned by the city north of the Gatlinburg Subdivision and south of E. Pecan Street. The plan was presented to the city council on May 28 and received a favorable response. "I like it," Mayor Scott Winton said. City Councilman Pat McCord agreed. "It's a nice layout," McCord said, "it has a lot to offer to a lot of different people."

The plan includes, among other amenities, the following features: a pavilion style event facility; a railroad; an ampitheater; a skate board park; a botanical garden; a neighborhood restaurant; a frisbee golf course; tree houses; and water type facilities. "It's pretty busy," City Manager Steve Jones said. The park, he said, could be built in phases, using the citizens' ideas as the master plan. "I like it," Councilman Wendell Holloman said, "What will it take to get started?" "A couple of million bucks," Jones responded. The city manager said the idea could be referred to the City's Bond Committee for review.

"My idea was to have the residents do some of the work," Holloman said. "They would take ownership." Holloman agreed that the idea should be used as a master plan but urged that citizen volunteers start work on it. The council took no action.

  • (4/11/02) Texas Recreation and Parks Society Gold Medal Award -- At the March 26 [council] meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Glenn Holzer presented [Mayor] Winton with the award. The city won for the communities of 25,000 or less category. Holzer said the city's recreation center and its hike and bike trail expansions were among the reasons listed for the honor. The city also garnered the award in 1995. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag]

  • (3/7/02) City Appoints Board Members -- Four members of the city's Parks and Recreation Commission and an alternate were reappointed to the board during the Feb. 25 City Council meeting. Ric Bowden, Phillip Cervin, Lonnie Logan and Corey Shepperd agreed to serve two more years. Alternate member Anthony Martin also was reappointed and will serve a one-year term.
