NETWORKING - INPUT - COOPERATION - SUPPORT - QUALITY OF LIFE

PfCONA was formed in 1985 by Pflugerville residents who wanted to provide a forum for neighborhood groups to collectively air their concerns and work with the City Council to resolve problems.

Its goal was to bring the community together. This goal continues today. Won't you join us in "building the community together?"

PFLUGERVILLE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

PISD teachers and administration staff impact the lives our children in the Pflugerville community. They deserve our moral support and help as much as we need theirs. Particular schools are integral parts of our neighborhoods where our children spend a good portion of their weekdays. They also need to get home safely, some on foot or on a bike. We should keep a watchful eye on their safety as well as play an active role in helping their teachers, school staff, and PISD board members give them the best education possible.

PISD Board of Trustees meet at 7 p.m. the third Thursday each month in the PISD Administration Building, 1400 W. Pecan St. Website is: www.pflugervilleisd.net/.

  • (8/7/03) Ambitious Caldwell Elementary School PTO Seeks 100% Parent/Teacher Membership for Upcoming School Year -- The Fannie Mae Caldwell Elementary PTO started off its first year as one of the newest editions to the PISD with a bang. The PTO held numerous successful family oriented events, including a fall Sock Hop Family Dance, a Winter Fest and Breakfast with Santa, a Mardi Gras Family Dance, Family Skate Nights, a Talent Night, and a Spring Carnival and Silent Auction which all contributed to the PTO surpassing its goal of raising $15,000 this past year. With the money raised, the PTO was able to purchase many items a brand new school needs and make donation of funds for the special programs at the school. Caldwell will now have a well deserved Marquee, library furniture, additional playground equipment, stage risers for music performances, funds to stock the scare Science and Literacy Labs, and much more. There was even enough funds leftover for the students to enjoy a full fledged Field Day, all compliments of the dedication and commitment of the parents, teachers, and students. The PTO also worked with the fourth and fifth grade Student Council members to help the students raise money for the purchase of basketball and soccer goals for the playground.

Caldwell PTO is gearing up for another fantastic year and they are very excited about increasing the involvement of the parents, teachers, and students. The school is still in need of many other items, including shaded areas. The PTO Board has only one message for the coming year--join up and join in and is putting out a challenge to all the parents and teachers to help reach an achievable goal of 100% membership. The PTO is sympathetic to parents and teachers who may not always have the time to volunteer, and joining the PTO is a great way to show support to the school--the $4 membership fees collected will help the PTO hold fundraising events. The annual membership drive starts during New Student Registration July 29th-31st and ends Sept. 5th. All members who join during that time will be entered for prize drawings to be held at the first General PTO Meeting and Parent/Teacher Night on Sept. 18th. Contact cwespto@yahoo.com for more information.

Fannie Mae Caldwell Elementary was dedicated on July 27, 2002. The students and faculty celebrated Fannie Mae Day on May 2, 2003 to commemorate her 103rd birthday. The Principal is Cindy Gee with Kathy Hernandez as Assistant Principal.

  • (8/7/03) Man Behind the Name of Pflugerville's Newest High School is an Inspiration to the Community -- After the citizens of Pflugerville passed a bond issue that would enable PISD to build a third high school, a name for the school had to be chosen. Some ex-students of the original Pflugerville H.S. petitioned that Robert E. Hendrickson would be the most appropriate choice for a name. Next week, the first 500 students will fill the freshly painted rooms and halls of Pflugerville's third high school, named after the WWII veteran, the inspirational educator, and one of Pflugerville High's  most esteemed principals. He also coached football and baseball, helped with administrative work, and eventually became superintendent for PISD. He is also credited with starting PHS' yearbook, Panther Paws, and bringing a National Honor Society charter to the school. He also helped as a bus driver, chaperoned senior trips, taught art, and personally funded the golf team.

  • (6/12/03) Pflugerville Students to Face Tougher TAKS Standard Next Year -- Most PISD students met or exceeded the statewide passing average on the new test in all but three areas--sixth grade reading and 11th-grade math and language arts. Next year, the bar gets raised and the TAKS test will be slightly harder to pass. While this year's was a practice exam for 11th-graders, next year, the test will count.

High School scores were among the lowest across the board, and in Pflugerville, scores tended to trail those in neighboring districts. "It's sobering--as we thought it would be," said Mark Billingsley, Pflugerville ISD coordinator of testing, "It's the same scenario as we had with the TAAS. The first year, TAAS scores came back and they scared everybody. The state keeps upping the standards, and we keep working to get kids where they need to be, and we'll continue to do that."

  • (5/22/03) Board Says Pflugerville ISD's Teachers Will Receive Annual Raises -- Despite tight budgets across Texas, at the PISD Board of Trustees meeting on May 15, PISD Deputy Superintendent Marc Walker proposed that Pflugerville teachers receive a $1,500 raise for the next school year. The compensation package includes a 3.7 percent increase for professional staff, a 3.8 percent increase for paraprofessionals and a 3.8 percent increase for the 167 other positions, which include custodial positions.

The trustees approved the proposal to use the $1.6 million in savings gained by eliminating extra teachers that were added during the year to meet state requirements, and then adding 571,000 to that portion of the budget.

Also during the meeting, PISD Superitendent Libby Garner presented fellow trustees with a report on the district's organizational health. The assessment of each school by an outside organization included anonymous teacher surveys, which showed the Pflugerville schools are highest on innovativenss and lowest on autonomy and adaptation. Dr. Carol Fletcher lauded the district's efforts: "Research shows that organizational health affects student achievement. This is a way to evaluate ourselves besides just using student test scores."

  • (5/22/03) Pflugerville ISD Elects Officers -- In the recent PISD school board election, incumbents Elva Gladney and Kennethh Thompson were reelected. The board has since met and elected its officers for the 2003-2004 year. They are Elaine Boozer, president; Kenneth Thompson, vice president; and James Hamann, secretary.

  • (6/13/02) Parmer Lane Ends Year with DARE Program, Prepares for Next -- The 2001-2002 school year has come to an end at Parmer Lane Elementary, but the staff and PTO are already making plans for the 2002-2003 school year. During the summer, Parmer Lane will be going through some renovations. The renovations will not be completed before school starts in August, therefore, some classes will begin the year in portable buildings. The PTO is planning to host a Sock Hop & Silent Auction in the fall, skating parties, an ice cream social, and many other activities. They will also be selling school supplies at the beginning of school, poinsettias in December, and cookie dough in the early Spring.

The DARE graduation for all fifth graders was held on May 16. The students had been working with Officer Quick from the Travis County Sheriff's office for the last 17 weeks. Officer Quick spoke to the students and their guests about the importance of what they had learned. Special guest, Sheriff Margo Frasier, spoke to the students about having a dream and following it by not becoming involved with drugs and violence. Each student had been required to write an essay about what they had learned from the DARE program. Teacher of the year is Lori Heisler--second grade, who is retiring this year after 20 years at Parmer Lane. Humanitarian of the year is Lynda Eliades the Art teacher. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag.]

  • (5/23/02) Trustees Dismiss Teacher Accused of Assaulting Student: Parent Says Books Video Depicts Whites Unfairly -- The Pflugerville school board voted after a closed-session to terminate a teacher who was charged with injury to a child on April 24. The charges were denied and the termination will be challenged at an independent hearing of the Texas Education Agency.

Also Thursday, the board heard a request for reconsideration of instructional materials by a parent who objected to what he called "harsh language and actions" in both "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry", a book by Mildred Taylor, and "A Place at the Table" a video shown as part of the school's tolerance program. PISD superintendent Libby Garner disagreed calling the novel an "appropriate example of historical fiction." Board president Clifford Danstrom concurred, saying that he thought it was important for "everyone to know all the things that have happened." The book, which has been on the reading list for 10 years and is a Newberry Award winner, has never incited any previous complaints.

"This video defends a lifestyle that the majority of Americans find objectionable for good reason", said parent objecting to video. Another parent said he was delighted with video because it showed things that were in history books but were rarely seen. Board member Carol Fletcher said the issue boiled down to the fact that some people will object to the material while others will not. She added that the board did not feel comfortable deciding for either group of people whether or not the material was acceptable. A recommendation by Gardner was passed that would require students to take permission slips home before "A Place at the Table" was shown, and require parents to sign them before the child was allowed to view the film. • (5/02) Pflugerville High School Makes Space Contact -- Roy Walker, from "Ham" radio, in conjunction with the team from Amateur Radio operators, assisted Pflugerville H.S. in making contact with the International Space Station Alpha. One student's dad, an astronaut on the Space Station Alpha, spoke to PHS students, answering thought-provoking questions the students came up with on their own. • (4/25/02) PISD Trustees Approve School Rezoning Plan -- Concerned parents in the Springbrook subdivision left school board meeting upset and empty-handed. Trustees approved the plan as presented, a plan which will affect 17 percent of PISD students. The new boundaries require students living in the Springbrook subdivision to move from Brookhollow Elementary School to Windermere Elementary School in the fall. Assistant Superintendent Steve Flores said "you may not like what you see but you will see that there is some rationale behind it." After a lengthy presentation of the new borders by Flores and very little discussion by the board, the members approved the rezoning proposal as it stood. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag.]

  • (4/18/02) Proposed School Rezoning Plans Head to Trustees Tonight -- PISD rezoning committee unveiled its proposal for new PISD high school and elementary school boundary changes. The committee, which has met six times and is made up of both parents and administrators, will present the changes to the school board for approval at a 7 p.m. meeting tonight. Elementary school boundaries, slated to go into effect for the 2002-2003 school year, were rezoned to a greater extent than high school boundaries, shifting children from three major subdivisions into new schools.

Parental opposition voiced at the meeting centered around excessive shuffling, feeder pattern disruption and varying qualities of education between schools in the district. Assistant Superintendent Steve Flores tried to maintain that the plan would increase stability in the future, but many of the parents accused the district of having said the same thing two years ago. Flores conceded that the district could offer no guarantees. "Can we say that you will not be rezoned again? No." Flores said. With regard to variance in quality of education, Flores was adamant in standing behind the quality of every school in PISD. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag.]
