CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Greater Pflugerville Chamber of
Commerce (GPCC) supports businesses. Our neighborhoods in turn frequent these businesses.
And businesses turnaround and support the schools and organizations that our neighborhood
residents are part of.
The GPCC sponsors events and activities throughout the year such as chamber chatter
luncheons, a banquet, a business expo, grand openings, networking functions, workshops,
and more. It would be good for neighborhoods to know what the GPCC is doing on behalf of
the community and vice versa.
To new residents and new businesses, GPCC says "Willkommen!" To those
considering relocation to the region, GPCC says come experience that Pflugerville Pfeeling

(5/15/03) Austin's Park and Pizza Races
to Finish Pflugerville Location -- Austin's Park and Pizza, a new 21.7-acre family
entertainment park located just north of Grand Avenue on the east side of IH-35 is
scheduled to open June 6, 2003. Austin's will feature a variety of outdoor amusements such
as miniature golf, batting cages, and go-karts, along with an impressive line-up of indoor
attractions like arcade games, laser tag and a full-scale restaurant. Patricia
Gervan-Brown, Greater Pflugerville Chamber of Commerce president and CEO said, "The
developers of Austin's Park and Pizza have started off as good neighbors and we welcome
this addition to our regional business growth, which could jump-start local tourism."
Gervan-Brown added, "Tourism brings in clean dollars without the need for city or
county services. Because of 9/11 and the economy, families are staying closer to home, but
still looking for entertainment outlets. Austin's Park should give residents and visitors
a reason to stay longer in the Greater Pflugerville area to shop, eat, fill their gas
tanks and trade with some of our more intimate local entertainment venues."
(5/16/02) 4B Board Must Re-examine
Potential of SH-130 Corridor -- The board had been looking to the SH-130 corridor as a
valuable source of future economic development, a plan that would be logistically crippled
by the absence of access roads along the highway. City Manager Steve Jones said not
building frontage roads was cheaper for TxDOT, and if the city wanted them it would have
to foot the bill, a bill so large that it would probably require citizens to pass a
multi-million dollar bond issue.
Patricia Gervan-Brown, president and CEO of the GPCC, who attended the meeting, said the
state had always intended for SH-130 to function primarily as a bypass for Interstate 35,
redirecting truckers and other NAFTA traffic from the congested state highway.
Though no figure has been quoted to Pflugerville in regard to the SH-130 right-of-way,
Travis County and the City of Austin have already agreed to pay 50 percent of their SH-130
right-of-way cost. Though the members of the board seemed vexed by the possibility that an
expensive right-of-way would not include frontage roads, Jones assured them that those
concerns would be addressed in upcoming meeting between the city and the Texas Turnpike
Authority, which is heading the project. The board also discussed the yet-to-be affirmed
notion that since the city will not be renewing its contract with the GPCC next year, the
PCDC should spearhead future economic development matters.
Board member Mike Callahan gave the results of a survey of economic development
corporations in other cities comparable to Pflugerville...Most had an economic development
director, usually hired after the first year in business, and had a close working
relationship with the Chamber of Commerce. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag]
(5/9/02) Study Says City, GPCC Should
Work Together on Issues -- By cutting formal ties with the GPCC, the City of
Pflugerville went against the grain of an ongoing economic development study of the area.
The study, done by TIP Development Strategies, Inc. recommended the city continue its
relationship with GPCC and increase its funding. Mayor Winton said the city could better
market and sell itself by having the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation board,
and possibly its own economic development director, handle those duties. The study was
ordered by the city based on the recommendation of its Economic Review Committee and was
commissioned before voters approved the half-cent sales tax in Aug. 2001.
Lin Uzzel, GPCC board president, said the group has planned a series of meetings to
generate solutions to the deficit, which is about one-third of GPCC's annual operating
budget. GPCC officials learned in late April the city would not be renewing the contract
for economic development services, which expires in September. GPCC had provided those
services for the past several years. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag]
(4/11/02) 4B Sales Tax Board Wants its
Role Clearly Defined -- John Franklin, president of the PCDC board of directors...said
he envisions the corporation as being a sales agent that would recruit firms to the city
rather than simply wait for prospects to come to town. "We've got to bring back
things that bring revenue to the city" he said. Mayor Scott Winton agreed. "If
we're not being proactive we're not going to be able to shape the city the way we want it
to be."
Before Pflugerville Community Development Corporation (PCDC) was formed earlier this year,
most of the city's economic development recruiting and retention was handled by the GPCC.
GPCC and the city are in the final year of a contract for a host of services from
responding to inquiries from firms to providing demographic and market information to
representing the city on various boards and groups. The contract is valued at $42,000
annually, according to GPCC president and CEO Patricia Gervan-Brown.
The question now is what role will GPCC play in terms of the city's economic development
plans. Brown noted GPCC representatives have attended each PCDC meeting to date and will
continue to do so. 'We will meet with them monthly to report activities. Economic
development is a huge industry in itself," she said. [Source: Pflugerville Pflag]
